Letters to the Editor The News Journal 12/5/2004 Give mall managers what they deserve Cheers and good will to the women arrested at Christiana Mall for selling nothing and soliciting a reaction. This story should be followed up. Many people are enraged that mall police would have these ladies arrested simply because they were attempting to raise the consciousness of consumers. Delawareans are very interested in this issue, which is no less than that of corporatism vs. democracy here in the First State. In response to this kind of anti-democratic behavior on the part of Christiana Mall management, consumers should give them what they deserve: nothing. Ellen Lebowitz, Newark 12/9/2004 'Buy Nothing' is way to curb materialism Psychotherapist Patricia Dalton's Sunday Perspective article identified excessive materialism as the culprit to spiritual emptiness. Simply put, we buy too much and overwork to do so. Dalton has seen countless examples of children neglected and overindulged and marriages ruined because of acquisitive behavior. She cites with approval people who are able to free themselves from the soul-deadening pace of the earn-and-spend treadmill. How ironic, then, that the Christiana Mall management decided to have three young women arrested who with "Buy Nothing" T-shirts and Santa hats. The mall administration likes to be a center with its mall walks for seniors and meeting rooms, but treated these women as trespassers who needed to be evicted for treating the mall as a public square. I don't much like the fact that over-consumption is one of the behaviors on which our economy depends. But I tolerate it. I will not tolerate the Christiana Mall's Scrooge-like behavior. I will no longer patronize the mall, not this season or any other. Come next Black Friday, I may be joining the "Buy Nothing" efforts. Rae Stabosz, Newark
While 30,000 to 475,000 gallons of oil sit in the Delaware River, it's good to know the state is protecting us from the evils of free speech on "Buy Nothing" day. As a member of the Green Party, it sickens me that this is how tax money is spent when our prisons are understaffed and real crimes are committed on our streets. Whether the mall is private or public space is arguable. If it's public, then folks have the right to speak there. If private, let the mall hire all security personnel itself. We the people are not offered the luxury of police officers in our homes or even neighborhoods 24/7. Why should Christiana Mall get special treatment? Daniel Verinder, New Castle 12/19/2004 Shopper stayed away from Christiana Mall I just wanted to let the Christiana Mall management know that I finished my holiday shopping and that I did not spend a dime in your facility. After their grinchy reduction of Salvation Army kettles last year and their pathetic response to the Buy Nothing Day Protesters this year, I won't be shopping there next year either. Maybe my dollars don't mean much, but if enough people turn away, perhaps the management will become more community friendly. Trebs Thompson, Newark Reprinted with permission of The News Journal |
