The NOTHING marketing team is interested in recruiting additional representatives to help spread the word about NOTHING. If you are interested in promoting NOTHING in your area, here are some basic instructions for how to proceed. Please regard these instructions as suggestions based on what has worked for other NOTHING marketing teams, and not as an absolute blueprint you must follow. Feel free to improvise and adapt the following instructions to your local circumstances. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROMOTION OF NOTHING 1. What You Need WHAT YOU NEED: (Click on links to download templates)
We suggest that when obtaining needed materials, you try to "walk the buy NOTHING talk" to the extent you can. For example, consider either getting T-shirts second-hand or purchasing them from a company that sells 100% organic cotton, union-made clothing, print your flyers on 100% recycled paper, etc. ADDITIONAL PREPARATION: 1) Communicate
as a group beforehand, ideally getting together in person. Recommended
agenda items: what motivates you to be part of a NOTHING sales team,
time and place of NOTHING promotion, coordination of tasks (such
as contacting media, obtaining/printing/making materials), , etc. ROLE OF NOTHING SALESPERSON Salespersons should walk into the mall with their attire already on, carrying bags labelled "FREE SAMPLES" and filled with containers of NOTHING (and flyers and receipts, if you choose to have them). Remember to act like other salespersons do. Be cheerful and friendly to customers. In order to attract customers, make your bag of FREE SAMPLES visible. It is recommended that you wait for customers to approach you; do not go up to people. Once approached by customers the basic script may go something like this (however, unexpected comments or questions will put your improv skills to use!): CUSTOMER: (approaching you) Can I have a free sample of whatever you have? SALESPERSON: (smiling) Sure! Hold out your hand! CUSTOMER, curious about what they're going to get, holds out their hand. SALESPERSON: (Taking out container, taking the lid off, then pouring NOTHING into customer's hand...) It's a revolutionary new product! It's affordable to all, zero-waste, sweatshop labor-free, and fun and creative. Plus, it's non-toxic, appropriate for all ages, family-friendly, and guaranteed not to contribute to global warming. Satisfaction guaranteed! CUSTOMER will probably laugh or smile. Some may ask further questions if they don't get it or respond with some sort of comment. SALESPERSON: (If customer expresses interest or asks for a flyer) And here's a flyer with more info about our product. (And as you're both parting ways...) And don't forget your receipt! In our company's many years of promoting NOTHING in malls, we have found a universal positive reaction to free samples of NOTHING. Many people laugh. Some say that this is exactly what they've been telling their spouse they want for Christmas. NOTHING salespersons have never been met by a hostile customer, but if, by any chance, someone does responds negatively, it's best not to get angry back. Unless they're interested in engaging in a respectful dialogue with you, just move on. IF YOU'RE STOPPED BY MALL SECURITY AND/OR POLICE Whether or not and to what extent mall security will stop you and try to limit your free speech rights will vary from mall to mall and state to state. Hopefully you will not be so harshly received by mall security as the NOTHING salesteam has in Delaware, but you should nevertheless be prepared in case mall security and/or police do stop you. If security stops you, it's generally good to following these tips: 1) Be self-confident and stay calm. If security gets angry at you, it's better to respond calmly back and not escalate the situation. 2) Allow one person to speak at a time (you might want to decide on a spokesperson beforehand). 3) Ask clarifying questions about any accusations or orders they make, and be persistent about getting direct answers. Ask for the names of all officials present. If they tell you to leave the mall, or try to restrict what you're allowed to do, ask what specific mall policy you are violating. If you are accused of soliciting, ask what exactly it is you are soliciting. Point out that you don't approach anyone and you only interact with people who first talk to you. 4) If, by any chance, they threaten you with arrest if you stay in the mall, it is up to individual NOTHING salespersons to decide what they feel comfortable doing, though it can be helpful to make this decision as a group. ROLE OF OBSERVERS/SUPPORT PERSONS: Depending on the size of your sales team and the location of your NOTHING promotion, you may want to have at least one observer/supporter, possibly even more. These persons should be dressed in regular attire. They can take detailed notes on what happens, write down names of any security officials or police who stop you, take pictures to document the event, communicate between any sub-groups you form, communicate with any media who comes or calls during the promotion, and provide any additional support. FOLLOW-UP: 1) Follow-up with media about your NOTHING promotional event. Media may be interested in interviewing you afterwards. 2) Spend some time together writing down detailed notes about your experience at the mall. 3) Let us know how
your NOTHING promotional event went! Send us a short report and
photos to post on this website! E-mail info@buynothing.biz. |
